Mitchell 1, a labor guide most American shops estimate from, publishes its times in tenths of an hour, six minutes per unit, calculated for an average trained technician using factory tools, and states plainly that they are a guide. Under flat rate you pay the published line regardless: a technician who finishes a 2.4-hour job in 90 minutes still bills 2.4.

On the Toyota 2GR-FE 3.5L V6 used in the Camry, Sienna, and Highlander, the rear cylinder bank sits roughly four inches from the firewall, and the factory procedure routes you through the upper intake manifold. Third-party estimates put the added time at one to two hours over front-bank access. That is a range rather than a book line because the per-VIN tables inside Mitchell 1 ProDemand and ALLDATA are subscription products.

The Ford 3-valve modular engines are the case I cannot speak to from my own hands. Ford issued spark plug removal instructions in TSB 06-15-2 for the 5.4L 3V and updated them in TSB 08-7-6 covering the 4.6L, 5.4L, and 6.8L. These engines use an M16 x 1.5 plug with an unusually long ground electrode shield that carbons in and shears off during removal, leaving the shield in the head. Ford released Rotunda tool 303-1203 to extract an empty shield and 303-1398 for when the porcelain stays behind. I have never pulled a broken shield out of a cylinder head. What I can vouch for is the paperwork: no manufacturer writes two bulletins and commissions two extraction tools for a failure that happens occasionally.

How often the manufacturer actually says to change them

The interval belongs to the plug-and-engine pair, not to the word printed on the box.

Chevrolet schedules spark plug replacement at 97,500 miles on the 5.3L and 6.2L V8 in the Silverado and Tahoe, and at 60,000 miles on the 2.7L TurboMax four, which runs hotter and erodes the electrodes faster. Honda publishes no mileage figure. Its Maintenance Minder computes service from operating conditions and displays code 4 for spark plug replacement; on Civics and Accords that code typically surfaces near 100,000 miles.

Denso rates the dual precious metal iridium plugs it supplies as original equipment on many Toyota and Lexus models for up to 120,000 miles. The same company rates its Iridium Power performance plug, with a 0.4 mm center electrode, at 30,000 miles. Both say iridium on the box. Chrysler ran copper plugs on a 30,000-mile interval in the 5.7L HEMI until switching to iridium in 2014, which is why a 2012 Charger and a 2016 Charger of the same displacement sit on schedules three times apart.

What torque spark plugs take, and why "snug" is not a number

Denso publishes tightening torque by thread diameter: 10 to 15 N·m for M10, 15 to 20 N·m for M12, 20 to 30 N·m for M14, and 30 to 40 N·m for M18. NGK's imperial figures fall in the same band for a 14 mm gasket-seat plug: 18.0 to 21.6 lb-ft in an aluminum head, 18.0 to 25.3 lb-ft in cast iron, with 12 mm plugs dropping to 10.8 to 14.5 lb-ft in aluminum. Aluminum heads take the lower number because aluminum threads strip first.

Without a torque wrench, Denso publishes an angle method: about half a turn past finger-tight for a new M14 plug, and about one-twelfth of a turn for a plug being reinstalled, since the gasket has already crushed.

Until around 2019 I passed along the anti-seize advice that circulates on truck forums, and I was wrong to. NGK's technical bulletin on the subject ended it for me. Their plugs ship with a trivalent zinc-chromate shell plating that already works as a release agent, and NGK's position is blunt: do not use anti-seize, it is unnecessary and can be detrimental, because it alters torque values by up to 20 percent and raises the risk of thread breakage or metal shell stretch. Denso states a flat prohibition on thread lubricant, on the grounds that it leads you to over-tighten and break the screw. Two manufacturers, one instruction. I had been repeating guidance that predates the plating.

Do new spark plugs need to be gapped?

Modern iridium and platinum plugs arrive gapped and should be installed as they come. GM's bulletin 03-06-04-060B, revised 30 July 2008, states it for the LS-family V8s: part number 12571164, ACDelco 41-985, is gapped to 1.01 mm (0.040 in) during manufacturing, the gap should not be changed, and a plug found improperly gapped should not be used. That revision exists specifically to tell technicians to disregard the "Set Gap Per Vehicle Specification" wording printed on the box. Denso is shorter: "Do not adjust the gap of a spark plug that has a fine electrode, such as a platinum plug or an iridium plug. It may result in damage of the center electrode."

I learned that from the expensive side. Checking a set of iridium plugs, I used a coin-style gauge, the flat disc with the stepped edge, and levered it against the center electrode the way you would on an old copper plug. One fine wire snapped clean off. I could not tell by eye which of the other three I had stressed, so all four went in the bin: about $60 in plugs I had already paid for once, plus a second parts run.

If you do check, NGK's guidance is a round wire-style or pin gauge for measurement, and adjustment of no more than plus or minus 0.008 inch from the factory preset. Bend the ground strap only. Never load the center electrode.

Spark plugs and ignition coils sit together and wear differently

Spark plugs wear on a curve. The electrodes erode, the gap widens, the coil is asked for more voltage to jump it, and the interval exists because that curve is predictable enough to schedule. Ignition coils do not have a curve. No manufacturer publishes a coil replacement interval, because coils fail as events, triggered by heat, vibration, or oil intrusion into the plug well. They are replaced when a misfire, a coil-circuit code, or visible cracking says so. Coil-on-plug units routinely pass 100,000 miles, and BMW's service bulletins for the N51, N52, and N52K make the logic explicit: replace all coils as a set at the first visit prompted by a coil failure.

The strongest argument against my position is a labor argument, and within its own boundaries it is correct. On a transverse V6, the plug job buys you 2 to 3.5 hours of access. If a coil quits 8,000 miles later, you buy that access a second time at $110 to $175 an hour to fit a part costing less than the labor required to reach it. On that engine, replacing all six coils during the plug job is a defensible bet.

What I would not do is generalize it. On an inline four where the coils are exposed the moment the cover lifts, a second visit costs half an hour, so pre-emptive replacement buys parts and nothing else. The bundling argument is a function of access hours, and it collapses when access is cheap.

What worn spark plugs set off in the computer

Worn plugs announce themselves as misfires. P0300 is the generic random or multiple cylinder misfire code, standardized across every make sold in the United States. P0301 through P0312 identify a specific cylinder in the trailing digits, so P0304 points at cylinder four. Coil circuit faults occupy their own block, P0350 through P0362, with P0351 covering coil A.

A cylinder-specific code names the cylinder, not the part: the plug, the coil, and the injector all feed it. The standard field test is to move the coil to another cylinder and rerun the engine. If the code follows the coil, the coil is the fault; if it stays with the cylinder, look at the plug and the injector. A steady check-engine light means the fault is logged; a flashing one means the misfire can damage the catalytic converter and is a stop-driving signal.

How to get the real number for your engine before you book

  1. Count the plugs. One per cylinder on nearly everything, except HEMI-family V8s, which take two per cylinder for 16.
  2. Find out whether the factory procedure calls for removing the upper intake manifold. That single line separates a one-hour job from a three-hour one.
  3. Ask the shop to show the labor line in hours, and to list intake gaskets separately if the manifold comes off.
  4. Get the torque figure and the factory gap for your part number before the plugs arrive, then check the out-of-box gap with a wire gauge and leave it alone.
