Can You Use a Peloton Bike Without a Subscription? Stay Unsure First

Yes, you can use a Peloton Bike without a subscription. Peloton’s support article “What Content Can I Access Without A Peloton Membership,” updated August 28, 2026, still lists Just Ride and three pre-selected sample classes on a Bike or Bike+ after you cancel or skip All-Access. Live metrics may appear on the touchscreen; none of those metrics, workouts, or progress are saved to your Peloton profile. In the United States, All-Access is $49.99 per month plus applicable taxes, per Peloton’s hardware promotions page and its App versus All-Access comparison. A used Bike from a private seller adds a one-time $95 used-equipment activation fee if you later attach All-Access. The 12-month Limited Warranty does not transfer. Just Ride is not identical on every generation: Peloton’s used-bike page says first-generation touchscreens with serial numbers starting 7201 no longer receive feature updates.

I spent 15 seasons on an arena changeover crew, walking finish-coat logs and sneaker-mark maps under rolling light after the crowd left. A floor can look fine under house lights and then show every scuff once the inspection rig comes on. I read a Peloton the same way: the listing photo is house lighting, and a ten-minute Just Ride on the exact serial is the rolling-light pass.

Which Peloton Bike are you looking at?

Peloton currently sells a Cross Training Bike at $1,695 and a Cross Training Bike+ at $2,695, with All-Access billed separately. Certified Refurbished Original Series bikes are listed at $1,145 for the Bike and $1,395 for the Bike+.

The Original Bike uses a resistance knob. Bike+ adds auto-follow resistance during Peloton classes, which only has a class to follow if All-Access is active. Cross Training Bike+ adds Peloton IQ tools that Peloton’s fiscal 2026 10-K ties to the paid membership. A used Original Bike with a 7201-series screen is a different machine from a current Bike+.

Peloton’s used-bike page is blunt about screens. Feature updates are no longer offered for first-generation touchscreens (serial numbers starting with 7201). Bike+ units, in Peloton’s History Summary notes, all use a Generation 1.2 screen. Old clips that treat Just Ride as one permanent layout were filmed on whatever build was shipping that year.

If the unit is a Peloton Rental Bike, stop. Peloton will not activate All-Access on a resold rental.

I prefer a serial-number check and a Peloton History Summary over any Marketplace sentence that says the bike “works great without the app.” The report covers first activation month, workout count while a subscription was attached, service visits, owner count, Protection Plan transferability, and recall flags. Workouts with no All-Access attached do not count.

What does Just Ride actually show without a membership?

Just Ride is Peloton’s free-ride mode on the Bike and Bike+. Peloton’s August 2026 no-membership article is the current entitlement. It lists Just Ride and three pre-recorded classes that are pre-selected and can change without notice. Scenic rides are excluded. Metrics may display; none of those metrics, workouts, or progress are saved to your Peloton profile.

Old support pages and videos still treat Just Ride as one permanent, identical mode for every model. A number on glass during the session is not workout history.

Peloton’s Bike user manual labels nine class-screen fields: cadence, output, resistance, time remaining, heart rate (only with a paired monitor), leaderboard, distance traveled, total output, and calories burned. Peloton’s “Bike and Bike+ Performance Metrics” article names the three core values the bike computes: cadence in rpm, output in watts, and total output in kilojoules. Cadence and resistance are measured; output is calculated from them.

Without All-Access, subtract membership overlays from that live count. Leaderboard, Target Metrics, Power Zones, Strive Score, and profile history sit on the paid side. Peloton’s “Just With Goals” article, updated August 24, 2026, lets members set a time goal up to 5 hours, a distance goal up to 100 miles or kilometers, or an output goal up to 9,990 kJ. The saved-history duration for a Just Ride with no membership is zero.

After cancel, Peloton’s Privacy Policy keeps personal information for as long as you use the services or as needed for the purposes collected. That is not a published day-count for old class history. Account deletion can take up to 30 days and removes workouts. Download the spreadsheet from the Workouts tab first if the old numbers still matter.

I have watched people call a live watt number “their data.” On a gym floor, that is a wet print.

What does the subscription still unlock?

All-Access is the membership that turns the Bike screen into Peloton’s class product. Peloton’s Membership Terms, last updated October 1, 2025, define it as household access at one residential address, up to 20 user profiles, on one product from each hardware category (one Bike or Bike+, one Tread or Tread+, one Row or Row+). Two Bikes in the same house need two All-Access plans.

What you are paying for: live and on-demand classes on the Bike touchscreen; leaderboard, Target Metrics, Scenic, Lanebreak, and Peloton IQ; saved history while the membership is active; household App access; Peloton Entertainment on the Bike screen; and auto-follow resistance on Bike+ during classes.

App Membership is a different product. Peloton’s August 2026 comparison lists U.S. App One at $12.99 per month plus tax when billed by Peloton, $15.99 through the iOS App Store, and App+ at $28.99 plus tax (annual App+ $289.99 on the October 2025 fee-change notice). App plans are one profile. They do not unlock classes on a Peloton Bike screen. App One allows three cardio-equipment classes per month; a class counts after 180 seconds. App+ unlocks unlimited app classes, still off the Bike hardware. Cadence-sensor pairing in the Peloton App is App+ only.

If you cancel All-Access and keep App+, you have found a phone class library. The Bike returns to Just Ride.

Peloton Entertainment is the Netflix and YouTube question people actually mean. Peloton’s Entertainment support article and the April 29, 2025 Output post both require All-Access to open that tab. YouTube there is free at YouTube; it still sits behind Peloton’s membership gate. Netflix needs All-Access and a Netflix account. Sideloading Android apps is a workaround some riders use. It does not overlay cadence, resistance, or output on the video.

Can YouTube, a tablet, or Bluetooth replace All-Access?

A conventional indoor bike plus a tablet is the substitute this search is circling.

| Need | Peloton, no All-Access | Peloton with All-Access | Conventional bike plus tablet | | Live cadence, resistance, output | On screen during Just Ride | On screen, then saved | Only if the bike has a computer or sensors | | Saved history | Zero new rides to the profile | Yes, while paid | In the tablet’s app | | Peloton classes on the bike screen | Three sample classes only | Yes | No | | YouTube on the bike screen | No Entertainment tab | Yes, via Entertainment | Yes, on the tablet | | Auto-follow resistance | No class to follow | Bike+ can follow class cues | Only on controllable trainers | | Native power/cadence out to Zwift | No | No | Common on FTMS trainers; rare on cheap spin bikes | | U.S. Peloton fee | $0 after the paid period | $49.99/mo plus tax | $0, or the class app you pick | | Used-bike Peloton fee | $95 if you later activate All-Access | Same $95 on private-sale used | None from Peloton |

Bluetooth on a Peloton Bike is mostly inbound. Peloton’s pairing article for bikes and treads states compatibility with Bluetooth and ANT+ heart-rate monitors, and the touchscreen pairs Bluetooth headphones. The Peloton App can take a Bluetooth cadence sensor; Peloton names Wahoo RPM Cadence and Wahoo TICKR X as known devices, App+ only.

The Bike does not natively broadcast Cycling Power or the Bluetooth Fitness Machine Service (FTMS) profile that Zwift and most trainer apps expect. Ray Maker’s February 2021 Bike+ review recorded that gap as a hardware fact. Lifehacker’s April 2025 Data Fitness Connector review describes a box that reads the Bike’s cadence and output and rebroadcasts them over Bluetooth, including during Just Ride with an expired membership. A tablet playing YouTube does not create that broadcast.

I would rather add a dedicated cadence sensor to a spin bike I own cleanly than assume a refurbished Peloton will talk to TrainerRoad because both list Bluetooth in the brochure.

How does a used Peloton change the deal?

Peloton’s used-bike page, still showing the fee in September 2026, charges new members a one-time $95 used-equipment activation fee on a Bike or Bike+ bought from a private seller. The fee includes a $25 spare-parts credit, 50 percent off up to three pairs of Peloton cycling shoes and a Bike mat, and a virtual onboarding session. Certified Refurbished units skip the fee. Temporary waivers have run; trust the live used-bike page at purchase.

Ask the seller for a factory reset (Settings > System > Factory Reset). Confirm it is not a rental. Run the serial through the History Summary and Peloton’s seat-post and pedal recall pages.

Warranty transfer on the Bike is measured in months, and the official number for the Limited Warranty is zero. Peloton’s used-bike FAQ answers the transfer question with a flat no. Coverage applies to the original purchaser, or to the original gift recipient with the original membership attached. Frame coverage is five years for that original owner, excluding moving parts. You do not inherit the remainder. Protection Plans purchased on or after April 5, 2022, may transfer once. Only the original owner can buy a Protection Plan.

Out-of-warranty repairs are on you.

What does it cost to wait instead of cancelling?

U.S. All-Access at $49.99 per month plus tax is $599.88 per year before tax if you stay monthly. App+ at $28.99 is $347.88 per year before tax, and it will not drive the Bike screen. App One at $12.99 (Peloton billing) is a strength-and-cardio app with a three-class equipment cap.

There is no single “monthly membership cancellation date” on the calendar. Peloton bills All-Access on the anniversary of activation. The manage-membership article’s example is activation on the 16th, billing every 16th. Activation on the 31st bills on the 1st after a short month. Peloton’s Membership Terms say that if you cancel, you may use the membership until the end of the then-current period, with no prorated refund (subject to listed Canadian and New York statutory rights). Bill-error claims have a 60-day window from the billing date.

If you need a short gap, Peloton still offers a pause of 1, 2, or 3 months, starting at the next billing cycle. During the pause you lose Peloton content on the Bike and on the app. Longer than three months, Peloton tells you to cancel and reactivate later.

A used private-sale Bike you plan to try without paying still carries the $95 activation if you later want All-Access. Refurbished from Peloton skips the $95 and includes a 12-month Limited Warranty.

I would run one honest month of use against $49.99 plus tax before I cancelled on a feeling.

What should you test while you are still unsure?

Stay unsure for one billing cycle.

  1. Identify the Bike generation and screen serial. Photograph the serial. Check for a 7201-prefix screen. Confirm Original Bike, Bike+, Cross Training Bike, or Cross Training Bike+. If it is used, pull a Peloton History Summary.
  2. Ride Just Ride and note which metrics appear. Write down cadence, resistance, output, time, distance, calories, and whether heart rate appears. End the ride and open the profile. If nothing saved, you have confirmed Peloton’s current no-membership rule.
  3. Confirm used-bike activation, rental status, and warranty. Refuse rental frames. Budget $95 if you will attach All-Access later on a private-sale unit. Treat the 12-month Limited Warranty as non-transferable unless you are buying Certified Refurbished.
  4. Price All-Access against App+ and a tablet setup. Write three columns: $49.99 per month plus tax on the Bike screen; $28.99 App+ on a tablet with Just Ride; a conventional bike plus free YouTube. Include the $95 if used.
  5. Test whether an external app can receive cadence or power. Pair a Bluetooth heart-rate strap (supported). Then try to pair the Bike itself to Zwift or TrainerRoad as a power source. If the app never sees watts or cadence, the YouTube plan needs a separate sensor, power-meter pedals, or a third-party bridge.

If step 2 shows live numbers and step 5 shows no export, you own a sturdy indoor bike with a built-in computer and a locked content store. That can be enough. It is also the machine a conventional spin bike and a tablet can imitate.

The glossy floor in an empty arena will tell you what happened last night faster than the marquee will. A used Peloton’s History Summary will do the same. Read the scuff pattern before you pay another month.

FAQ

Can I use my Peloton if I cancel my membership?

Yes. Peloton’s August 2026 support article still lists Just Ride and three pre-selected sample classes on a Bike or Bike+ after All-Access ends. Live metrics can appear; they are not saved to your profile. You keep the hardware and lose classes, Entertainment, and new workout history.

Is a Peloton bike worth having without a subscription?

It is worth it if you want a solid indoor bike and will read live cadence, resistance, and output without saving them. It is a poor buy if you need classes on that screen, auto-follow, or export to training apps. Price a conventional bike plus a tablet against the used frame, the $95 fee, and a dead warranty.

What are the negatives of a Peloton bike?

All-Access is $49.99 per month plus tax in the U.S., and App plans do not unlock the Bike screen. Used private-sale units add $95 to activate. The 12-month Limited Warranty does not transfer. The Bike does not natively broadcast power or cadence to Zwift. First-generation 7201 screens no longer get feature updates.

Can I use a Peloton bike without a subscription with free workout videos?

Yes, as two separate screens. Just Ride shows live metrics. A phone, tablet, or TV can play free YouTube classes beside it. The video app will not receive cadence, resistance, or output unless you add a sensor, power-meter pedals, or a third-party bridge. Watching is not pairing.

Can I watch YouTube on a Peloton without a subscription?

Not through Peloton Entertainment. Peloton’s Entertainment page and April 2025 Output post require All-Access to open that tab, even though YouTube itself is free. Without All-Access, play YouTube on another device while you Just Ride. Netflix on the Bike also needs All-Access plus a Netflix login.

What Peloton subscription options are available?

U.S. All-Access is $49.99 per month plus tax for the household on one Bike or Bike+, with up to 20 profiles. App One is $12.99 per month plus tax via Peloton, or $15.99 via iOS. App+ is $28.99 per month plus tax. App plans do not run classes on the Bike hardware.

Why is Peloton no longer popular?

The search overstates the decline. Peloton’s fiscal 2026 10-K and August 6, 2026 results show 2.553 million paid connected-fitness subscriptions as of June 30, 2026, down 247,000, or 8.8 percent, from 2.800 million a year earlier. Members were about 5.5 million. Fiscal 2026 net income was $63.2 million after a fiscal 2025 loss.
